Athearn SD9 pilots were grafted to the Atlas SD24 due to their better detail. The Atlas pilot's center
"shovel" shape was grafted into the Athearn opening below the couplers. |

Front view. Handrails are stock Athearn stanchions with custom-made brass wire railings. Each corner rail
terminates at the side rail - these rail junctions are ACC-glued and are somewhat fragile. |

Front detail. The Tyco GP20 low nose, windshield, and number board housing was grafted as a single piece into
the Athearn SD9 cab; joints were filled with putty. Today a Proto2000 GP20 cab and nose would make this a lot
easier and have better detail. The headlight visor is styrene, attached into a notch cut in the cab roof and
puttied smooth. The beacon really flashes thanks to a Digitrax FX-equipped decoder. |

Left cab side. Window glazing is .015" clear plastic, carefully cut to fit in each window opening. The cab mirrors
are a small piece of styrene glued to an "L" of brass wire. |
