Athearn SD9 pilots were grafted to the Atlas SD24 due to their better detail. The Atlas pilot's center "shovel" shape was grafted into the Athearn opening below the couplers.

Front view. Handrails are stock Athearn stanchions with custom-made brass wire railings. Each corner rail terminates at the side rail - these rail junctions are ACC-glued and are somewhat fragile.

Front detail. The Tyco GP20 low nose, windshield, and number board housing was grafted as a single piece into the Athearn SD9 cab; joints were filled with putty. Today a Proto2000 GP20 cab and nose would make this a lot easier and have better detail. The headlight visor is styrene, attached into a notch cut in the cab roof and puttied smooth. The beacon really flashes thanks to a Digitrax FX-equipped decoder.
