Welcome to the BNSF SD40 Rebuild Page. BNSF SD40 #7300-#7339 are former Canadian National and Grand Trunk Western locomotives. They were converted to "SD40-2" standards by Alstom at Point St. Charles, PQ. They are on a ten-year lease from Newcourt Capital USA. Robert Jacox adds the following: BNSF 7300-7339 were remanufactured by Alstom Canada from CN Rail SD40's in the 5000-5200 series, released 9/01/99 through 10/12/99. I am not sure if this is all of the units in the group, or more came later.
The most distinctive feature of these units is the snow shields over the air intakes behind the cab. Also, they are (externally) plain old SD40's with Flexicoil trucks that have a script "Dofasco" (the maker of the trucks) cast in the truck sideframe between the 2nd and 3rd axles. Headlights are located above the cab windows between the number boards, and the Canadian-style classification lights above each number have been covered over with round plates. On the rear the hood the headlights are stacked vertically (as opposed to US-built units with the rear headlights positioned horizontally).
They feature brakewheels on the left side of the nose (ex-Santa Fe SD40's have recessed ratchet-style brake levers inset into the left side of the nose, while ex-BN SD40's have brakewheels on stands located at the rear of the hood).
Many thanks to Joseph Belote, Roger Beckett, Mark Gillings, and Robert Jacox for the information.
