BNSF Warbonnet Checklist
This page is dedicated to recording all ATSF Warbonnets with hood lettering modified to "BNSF".

Please send any additions/corrections and comments to Jim Czarnecki.

Units known with BNSF lettering are shown in the tables on a red background. Underlined numbers have sample photo links provided courtesy of the photographers listed in the summary at the bottom of this page. Note that early repaints had very large "BNSF" lettering on the hoods, but this has since been standardized (well, maybe not...keep reading) to a smaller size. Tim Harris has provided a comparison shot of two 500's with the different styles in the same consist. The above shot is courtesy of Alan Radecki, and clearly shows the very significant difference not only in the lettering, but also the style of the Warbonnet on Santa Fe vs BNSF GP60M's. Read the notes below for BNSF-557 ..... it seems like we're in for further changes to the Warbonnet.

100 series notes:

101 wrecked in Niota, IL mishap; will be rebuilt.

Keel Middleton reports #100, #128, and #155 have had their nose
herald changed from ATSF to BNSF in November 1998.

Joseph Belote reports #118, #125, and #159 have been renumbered using
'BNSF' lettering applied under the cab - similar to the 200-series SD75Ms. Also:
ATSF #142 was renumbered at Topeka on 04-Aug-2000 to BNSF #142.
ATSF #151 was renumbered at Topeka on 17-Aug-2000 to BNSF #151.
Also:
BNSF #118, #125, #141, #142, #147, #151, and #159 have all been relettered "BNSF".
On the long hood, the Santa Fe lettering remains, as it does on the Cigar Band. However,
below the cab number there is BNSF sublettering. This is identical to the way the
8200-8250 SD75M-series were done.

David Hawkins has provided an update photo of #140, as she is now
wearing BNSF on her cigar band.

John Hake reported (05/03/97):
"Today sitting outside of the gate at Mid America Car in Kansas City is former ATSF 557 which was at mid am for a paint job. It is still in red and silver, however there are 2 modifications to the paint. The BNSF on the side is still in red, however it is of the size ot the logo on the sides of the pumpkin units. In addition the number on the side of the cab is of a very plain font and is about twice as tall as the older version. I was not impressed with either of these changes."
