The warbonnet paint scheme was introduced on EMC E1 diesel locomotives 2 and 2A, the first of the Santa Fe's 2 class, delivered in June 1937 for the first streamlined "Super Chief." With minor variations, the same paint scheme was also used on the prewar E3, E6, and DL-109/110 locomotives. In 1946 the warbonnet was first applied to F units, including 100-class FTs converted to passenger duty and new 16-class F3s delivered by EMD. That year also saw the introduction of the Alco 51 class, PA-1s and PB-1s, in warbonnet paint. by Andy Sperandeo of MODEL RAILROADER Magazine.
