Foreign cars

From Fred Frailey’s Quarter Century of Santa Fe Consists:

Starting in 1946 the Chief had 3 sleepers from eastern roads:

from New York City, PRR (Broadway Ltd) 4-4-2

from New York City, NYC (20th Century Ltd) 4-4-2

from Washington, B&O (Capitol Ltd) 6-6-4

In 1949, a second sleeper (10-5) was added from the 20th Century Ltd, to make the total 4 cars.

On January 15, 1954, the Super Chief was assigned these four cars, and the Chief was given 4 coaches to replace them

PRR 4-4-2 (Regal Ruby, River, Spa, City, Inn, Ring)

NYC 4-4-2 (Regal Gate, Gulf, Arms, Creek, Town, Court)

NYC 10-6 (Pine Arroyo, Brook, Dale, Island, Cove, Fern)

B&O 10-6 (Pine Leaf, Gem, Creek, Pass, Ring, Beach)

The normally used cars were painted in Pennsy and NYC versions of two tone grey.

Rivarossi (AHM) smooth side 10-6 sleeper can be used for the 10-6 NYC sleeper.

Brass Car Sides has kit 17 which is correct for the 4-4-2 sleeper of PRR and NYC.

Eastern Car Works kit 1330 is also correct for the 4-4-2 sleeper of PRR and NYC.

Michael Flick reports: In 1946 there were three transcontinental sleepers running on the Chief, NYC 4-4-2, PRR 4-4-2, B&O 6-6-4. When the second NYC car was added, it was initially a 10-5 Cascade series, it was added before 1949. The NYC 10-5 was then changed to a 10-6, later the B&O car was changed to a 10-6. B&O through car was always assigned as a Santa Fe car, no B&O cars ever regularly assigned. After cars moved to Super Chief in 1954, only Santa Fe cars were regularly assigned to all four sleeping car lines until all discontinued by 1958.

Special thanks to Michael Flick (trains@trainstationohio.com) for his help and for an article in Santa Fe Modeler, May/June 86 and September/October 81 on this subject.

A Word of Caution.

The publication, Car and Locomotive Plans for Model Railroaders published in 1948 and 1953 has been the source of plans for a number of manufacturers of brass and plastic. Unfortunately faulty plans have resulted in erronious models. The Concor Baggage Car was based on a drawing of 3446-3452 that shows a smooth roof when the roof was Budd fluted. Coach 3137-3166 has a fluted roof photograph but a smooth roof drawing.

Also one can not always believe the captions for photos.

Con-Cor 85' Car Discussion

by
Tom Cockle

The Con-Cor 85' cars have several different prototypes (at least nominally):

Baggage: No actual prototype--was taken from the Santa Fe Plan Book, but
those plans had several errors, and car is actually a hybrid among several
prototypes.

Coach: Also taken from Santa Fe Plan Book--not exact match, but pretty
close to Budd-built ATSF 3139 class, with addition of corrugated
letterboard and roof.

Diner: Also taken from Santa Fe Plan Book--reasonably accurate for ATSF
600 class diners (used on Super Chief only)

Regular Dome: Also taken from Santa Fe Plan Book--reasonably accurate for
ATSF 500 class dome lounges--the fabled "Pleasure Dome-Turquoise Room" cars
used on Super Chief only.

Regular Observation: Also taken from Santa Fe Plan Book--reasonably
accurate for ATSF 3197, a one-of-a-kind car.

Slumbercoach: Standard Budd design, used by several roads

Dome Observation: Budd-built California Zephyr car

10-6 Pullman: Budd-built design, has window pattern of California Zephyr
cars, but similar to Budd-built sleepers of other roads also.

Budd Dome: California Zephyr dome coach

Note that all of these cars have a strange "reverse" or "mirror image"
fluting pattern--i.e., the fluting has round peaks and sharp valleys,
instead of vice versa. The trucks on most cars are also not appropriate,
but that is easy to change.
