Over a five year time frame, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe placed seven orders for GE's C30-7s. The locomtives roamed the vast Santa Fe system while operating in all type of service. In 1989, the railway traded 57 C30-7s to GE for the order of Dash 8-40Bs. These traded units were then placed into GE's lease fleet, and sent to work on various railroads, which included CSX, SP, BN, and C&NW. Sometimes the units were temporary units, until new locomotives were delivered by GE.
Conrail was a large purchaser of ex-Santa Fe C30-7 locomotives, and rostered many of the units in system wide service. Conrail also carried specifics about their ex-ATSF C30-7 engines. Photos of ex-Santa Fe C30-7 locomotives in Conrail service are available.
Montana Rail Link's Livingston Rebuild Center and its leasing subsidiary also made good use of ex-Santa Fe C30-7 locomotives, as two of the LRCX locomotives, #8106 and #8111, make their presence known on the East Coast.
