Welcome

Welcome to Lynn Aldrich's historical Railfanning the Santa Fe in Hutchinson, KS site.

Mr. Aldrich is an avid railfan who has been writing down his activities for over 40 years. He sends out a daily report of his modern railfanning observations, and it is in these reports that Mr. Aldrich has started to include the historical records of what Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe trains he observed around the Hutchinson, KS and surrounding region over the past years.

Mr. Aldrich has generously granted QStation.org the right to record these Santa Fe historical reports on the World Wide Web so others may enjoy the railroad endeavors of the Santa Fe in years gone by.

QStation.org would like to thank Mr. Aldrich for his notes, and the permission to place them on this site, and to Keel Middleton whose help was instrumental in getting this website initiated.

The site has had its last update on: 04 July 2007.

03 December 1966
Attached photo was taken om 12-03-1966 on my first trip to Waynoka.
Went with Lloyd Stagner in our younger years. The following is what we
saw on that trip.

We went to see the new POOL WC's which were now working Waynoka and west.
They were being rebuilt in the West Wichita (old Orient) shops. An earlier try
to get in there was repulsed by a guard. Very disappointing. At Waynoka we did manage
to see and photograph the WC's 999013, 012, and 006. It was a cloudy cold dreary day.

Starting the action a Pratt, Ks.

Have a note under this entry that on 4-13-65 a set of 4 units of 400's with test car came thru Wellington. Ddoes anyone know anything about this????

That is about the time that EMD was running test units 434A-through 434 H around testing the SD40/45 ideas. These are the units that ended up as Union Pacific 3040-3047. They were all black. Do not confuse with the 434(no suffix) that was painted in blue & yellow (bookend style) and was on the Santa Fe for some time

Lynn's Way turn that he is speaking of is from Dodge City to Hutchinson Yard (Way) and back to Dodge City. Bet the crew was not happy as this would have been a Newton Crew at the away from home terminal of Dodge City going near home then back to Dodge and the foot of the board. They would have been in Dodge City until it was their turn to work again. Something like making a Kiowa Turn out of Waynoka for the Wellington Crews, very frustrating! Keel
