Not too bad a day for train watching 40 years ago. Attached photo shows the train on a track that no longer exists pulling into the south or east bound yard at Emporia. The eb yard has been removed. The signal bridge in the photo had three sets of signals before it was demolished in a wreck with a low-boy at the crossing several years ago.

That is about the time that EMD was running test units 434A-through 434 H around testing the SD40/45 ideas. These are the units that ended up as Union Pacific 3040-3047. They were all black. Do not confuse with the 434(no suffix) that was painted in blue & yellow (bookend style) and was on the Santa Fe for some time

Way turn in with 2841-2883 and 83 cars plus waycar had 81 box cars, one tank car and one gray passenger work car for the 83 cars. Went back west with two box cars and waycar. One of the box cars was 145634 a new brown paint car.
Lynn's Way turn that he is speaking of is from Dodge City to Hutchinson Yard (Way) and back to Dodge City. Bet the crew was not happy as this would have been a Newton Crew at the away from home terminal of Dodge City going near home then back to Dodge and the foot of the board. They would have been in Dodge City until it was their turn to work again. Something like making a Kiowa Turn out of Waynoka for the Wellington Crews, very frustrating!
